Late Model Showdown at The Gap’ scheduled Saturday, April 25

BULLS GAP, Tenn. — Volunteer Speedway will roar to life for the track's 2009 season-opener by hosting the second annual Fastrak Racing Series “Late Model Showdown at The Gap” on Saturday, April 25.

Both the Fastrak Racing Series Late Model competitors and Super Late Model chauffeurs will each battle in 50-lap, $3,000-to-win main events. Also racing on Saturday, April 25 will be "McDonald's" Hobby Stocks.

"I’m really excited about this upcoming ‘Late Model Showdown at The Gap,’ because just like last year's event it will cater to fans who like both Super Late Model and Fastrak Late Model action,” said Fastrak founder and CEO Stan Lester from the sanctioning organization's Carnesville, Ga., headquarters. “A strong contingent of touring Fastrak racers and all the top Super Late Model competitors from around the East Tennessee region will be present for the twin $3,000-to-win races. I’ve said it since the first time I ever visited Volunteer Speedway – 'I love The Gap.' I hear it all the time from the fans, about how they would just like coming out for a night of Late Model racing, and basically that's what we’re giving them (fans) at this event.

"Last year some of the best Super Late Model teams in the country were present including NASCAR star Bill Elliott. Over 70 total Late Models were in the pits for the Late Model Showdown at The Gap, and I look for possibly a larger overall car-count this year. We've increased both purses this year where the winner of each feature will collect $3,000, which could well raise the bar on the kind of racing fans can expect to see on the high banks. I take great pride in our Fastrak events in getting things done in a timely fashion by getting the show started on time and, our plans are to be done with the night's entire racing program by 11 p.m."

With the Fastrak Racing Series portion of the program a Southern/Smoky Mountain/Mideast Touring Series points event, expect to see such competitors present as defending Fastrak national champion Royce Bray of Hull, Ga.; Lee Cooper of Greer, S.C.; Lawndale, N.C.'s Ron Parker; David Smith of Inman, S.C.; Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga.; Ross Bailes of Blacksburg, S.C.; Rural Retreat, Va.’s Kenny Peeples Jr.; Chris Steele of York, S.C.; Timbo Mangum of Lancaster, S.C.; Woodruff, S.C.'s Owen Osteen; Chris Cantrell of Chester, S.C. — plus East Tennessee competitors Dale Ball of Johnson City, Jonesborough's Jerry Broyles, Jensen Ford of Piney Flats, Bobby Mays of Jonesborough, Newport's Josh Henry, Todd Brooks of Greeneville, Mosheim's Ricky Moore, Greeneville's Larry Rowe, Joe Good of Greeneville, Brent Hensley of Morristown, and many more.

Look for such East Tennessee Super Late Model chauffeurs to be in action as Vic Hill of Morristown, Kerry Jones of Bristol, Tommy Kerr of Maryville, Greeneville’s Jeff Maupin, Knoxville’s Mark Douglas, Billy Ogle Jr. of Knoxville, Rogersville’s Mike Smith, Mark Vineyard of Powell, Knoxville’s Rick Rogers, Anthony White of Clinton, Dale Ball of Johnson City, Powell’s Steve Smith, Bryan Hendrix of Knoxville, Chad Ogle of Sevierville, Roger Best of Maryville, Mike Weeks of Friendsville, Shon Flanary of Mount Carmel, Marty Calloway of Maynardville, Brandon James of Newport, John Tweed of Greeneville, plus several others battling it out for the $3,000 winner’s share of the purse.

The pit gate will open on Saturday, April 25 at 3 p.m. with the grandstand gate opening at 5 p.m. Hotlaps are tentatively scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., to be followed by qualifying and then racing action.

Both the Fastrak Racing Series Late Models and the Super Late Models will lock the top-12 in from qualifying for respective 50-lap features, with the remainder of the starting positions to be determined through last chance consolations. The top-six starting spots in both Late Model events will be determined through the kids’ draw, where six lucky youngsters will be selected from the grandstands to come down on the front straightaway to select the starting positions for the driver they’re paired-up with.

An autograph session with both Fastrak Late Model and Super Late Model drivers participating will be held beginning at 6 p.m. in the spacious pavilion building located behind the front-straightaway grandstands. Everyone loves fireworks, and an impressive aerial display will illuminate the skies over Volunteer Speedway.

Adult grandstand admission is $18 and youth admission (ages 10-15) $5, with children 9-and-under admitted free in the grandstands when accopanied by an adult. Backside tier-parking and pit admission will be $35.

With everyone experiencing tight budgets due to the tough economic times, who wouldn’t want to save some money? Fastrak Race Promotions advises race fans to be on the lookout in Bulls Gap, Greeneville, Rogersville, Morristown and Newport business locations for coupons good for $5 off adult grandstand (not in pits) admission, thus making the night of racing even more affordable. The McDonald's located on Speedway Lane beside the racetrack, and also McDonald's locations in Greeneville and Rogersville will have discount admission coupons.

Race cars and drivers, along with Volunteer Speedway and Fastrak Racing Series officials will be present at the Speedway Lane McDonald's on Saturday, April 25 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. for a meet-and-greet opportunity for area race fans.

A night of open practice will be held on Friday, April 24. The pit gate will open at 6 p.m., with practice scheduled from 7:30 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. Pit admission will be $15 per person, and the grandstands will not be open to watch practice.
