Fairgrounds Speedway at Nashville offers NASCAR testing

By Terrell Davis

Fairgrounds Speedway at Nashville is extending a helping hand to NASCAR race teams by making the famed 5/8ths-mile track available as a testing facility.

According to the track’s new promoter, Nashville businessman Danny Denson, plans to make the facility available as a testing site for NASCAR’s top three divisions, the Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series, have been met with a great amount of enthusiasm by NASCAR teams.

“Since NASCAR now has rules that prohibit their top three divisions from practicing at tracks that host NASCAR events, we feel Fairgrounds Speedway at Nashville can offer teams a great testing facility that is conveniently located,” Denson said. “Teams can test for short to intermediate size tracks and not break any NASCAR rules or their budgets.”

Once the site of two Cup races per year, NASCAR’s last Cup race was held at the track in 1984. The track hosted a Busch event and Craftsman Truck race each year until 2000 when the leaseholder, Dover Motorsports moved the events to their new facility, Nashville Superspeedway, located near Lebanon, Tennessee.

Since then, the track has continued to host a popular weekly racing series topped by Late Model, SuperTruck and Sportsman divisions.

The track’s General Manager, Larry Weakley, said he has been extremely pleased with the reaction of teams that he has contacted about using the track as a test facility.

“We have just gotten started contacting teams and the reaction has been very positive,” he said. “We’re also happy about having some of NASCAR’s top teams call us about testing at the Fairgrounds. I’ve been busy filling in the details for a number of teams about dates that are available. I know that they’ll quickly see the benefits and value in using the Fairgrounds as a test site. We look forward to getting even more calls from NASCAR teams. Even if it is only testing, it will be great to see Cup cars back at the Fairgrounds.”
