Scottie Haggard knows his way around a race car NASCAR crew chief Bootie Barker isn’t the only man that successfully makes his way around a racecar in a wheelchair/motorized scooter. A young man from Cooperstown, Tennessee has been the lead mechanic on preparing his dad, Tim’s, number 17 Sportsman racecar for its first outing at the Motorplex this past Saturday night. Although the car failed to finish the race because of a bad coil wire, it proved to be competitive and Tim couldn’t have been prouder if he had won the race. “When Scottie is working on the car, I’m only called in when he just can’t reach something, which isn’t often,” the proud pop said before the race. As for Scottie, he was pleased with the car’s performance, but, as could be expected, was not pleased about a coil wire knocking them out of the race. “I can’t believe something like a coil wire took us out of the race,” he said, “but we’ll be back again and we’ll be better.” We believe you Scottie….and just like you dad, we believe in you. *** Deborah Renshaw plans to race at the Motorplex
Deborah Renshaw, who raced in both the ARCA and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series after learning the racing ropes in the Late Model Division at the Motorplex at the Fairgrounds in Nashville, will be returning to her racing roots possibly as early as next week. While visiting the track Saturday night, the popular racer said she would probably be competing again at the Fairgrounds in a few weeks. Renshaw said she will be driving in the Late Model Division and possibly the SuperTruck Division as well. Rumors have her driving a car from Andy Johnson’s Hooked-Up Motorsports. The SuperTruck ride could be prepared by Formosa Racing. Either way, the rides will be competitive, as will, we suspect, Renshaw. ***
Ronnie Campbell’s the real deal Those doubting race fans who didn’t believe Ronnie Campbell was a real racecar driver, can now give the Pegram, Tennessee resident the stamp of approval. Campbell beat veteran racer Ricky Bolden in a breath taking duel that as Campbell said after the race, “looked like we both drove 40-laps of qualifying.” Campbell’s Wendell Mobley prepared SuperTruck, was hooked up on the high side of the track and while Bolden could get beside Campbell, he could complete the pass. “I was just too tight in the middle of the turns,” Bolden said. “He was driving away from me from the middle out and there wasn’t anything I could about it. But it was fun racing and I hope the fans enjoyed it.” Campbell agreed. “I use to sit in the stands and watch guys like Ricky race and hoped that someday I could compete with them,” he said after the race. “I wanted to be considered a racecar driver and I think after tonight, I am.” Well said Ronnie! And we whole heartedly agree. And as for the rest of the SuperTruck field….John Earheart, Daniel Victory, Steven Meador and Blake Carter put on a whale of a show for third through sixth place. Victory finally got past Earheart for third with Meador and Carter taking fifth a sixth. *** No one can bring down the “House” We’ve been a fan of Michael House since first seeing him race at Riverview Speedway in Carthage, Tennessee. He also left his mark at Highland Rim in several divisions. Now, he is the driver to beat in the Sportsman Division at the Motorplex. House has won five of seven Sportsman races and one of those loses came from a disqualification that was, at best, a picky call by MCM officials. House has also taken most of the qualifying bonus offered by Middle Tennessee Racing News. In fact, if this continues, we’re just gonna put him on our payroll.
