Late Model Bounty Finally Claimed by Andy Johnson June 23rd at the Motorplex

by David Underwood

NASHVILLE, TN – Andy Johnson started up front and stayed up front in the DryGDSI.com NASCAR Late Models June 23rd on Goody’s Night at the Fairgrounds Music City Motorplex.  Not only did Johnson take his first win in 2007, he also broke Mark Day’s winning streak and claimed the additional $500 Bounty Bonus.

Johnson and Curran Photo and Design Fast Qualifier Todd Morris led the field down to take the green flag for the fifty lap feature.  Johnson pulled out in front with Josh Adams making short work of Morris moving into the second position.  Day moved into the third spot followed by Morris, Josh Weston and Michael Driskell.  The top two pulled out to a two second lead over the rest of the field where Steadman Marlin was charging up through the field.  Marlin picked his way into the top five from his thirteenth starting position by lap thirty-seven.  Johnson picked up the win followed by Adams, Day, Morris and Marlin.

OnTrackPhoto.com Fast Qualifier Ronnie Campbell and Ricky Bolden led the T-Mobile NASCAR Super Trucks to take the green flag for their forty lap feature.  Campbell took the led on the green flag, but Bolden stayed right on his rear bumper.  John Earheart and Daniel Victory ran door to door for the first ten laps before Earheart made his way into the third position.  Bolden got along side of Campbell several times and the two ran side by side for numerous laps before lap thirty-two when Chase Mattioli and Larry Cunningham got together bringing out a caution.  Mattioli and Cunningham both made hard impact with the outside wall in turn one, but fortunately both drivers walked away unhurt.  Campbell remained out front on the restart and till the checkered fell, collecting his third win of 2007 followed by Bolden, Victory, Earheart and Steven Meador.

Lee Goddard jumped out to an early lead in the NASCAR Grand National Sportsman feature.  Middle Tennessee Racing News Fast Qualifier Michael House made his way around Goddard by lap five taking over the top spot.  Eddie Taylor suffered a flat tire on lap six ending his top five run.  House, Goddard, Derrick Johnson and Jeffery Belt ran nose to tail until lap twenty-four when Belt suffered a flat tire.  House held off a hard charging Goddard to take his fifth win of 2007 followed by Goddard, Johnson, Wayne White and Sam McCord.

Josh Berry takes the caution filled win in the Legend Semi Pro division.  Berry had his hands full of Dylan Ames and Brandon Summers running second and third until lap thirteen when Ames and Summers got together exiting turn four sending both cars spinning.  Berry took the win followed by Rob Sanders, Chris Buttrey, Giles Martin and Larry Bowser.

Tyler Cordell and James Fowlkes put on a great show in the Legend Pro/
Master division.  Fowlkes led the first portion of the race with Cordell beating on his rear bumper lap after lap.  Cordell finally made his way around Fowlkes and the next three position top advantage.  Cordell held on to take the win followed by Chris Wilson, David Moyes III, Kevin Rollins and Fowlkes.  Kenny Summers picked up the Master’s victory.

Kyle Ivey took the win in the Thunderstox after a wild start.  John Waldron and Charles Goddard Jr got together coming to the green while Stephanie Barnes and William Coats went spinning in turn one.  After all the dust settled, Ivey took the win followed by Charles Groves, Waldron, Clint Ivey and Charles Goddard Sr.

Allen Ring made a late race pass on Ricky McIllwain to take his first Dwarf win of 2007.  McIllwain led Ring until lap thirteen, with only two laps to go, when Ring made a daring three wide pass through lap traffic to get around McIllwain.  Ring held on to take the win followed by McIllwain, David Ring, Rick Webster and Carter Cheek.

Mason Massey made it four for four by picking up the Bandolero Bandit victory.  Massey dominated the race while Blake Jones and Evan Bell battled for second and third positions.  Massey came home first with Jones, Bell, Sean Hosey and Zachary McLean rounding out the top five.

Scott Hensley led flag to flag taking the Bandolero Young Gun victory.  Michael Bolden, Larua Gentry and Tyler Mullins all got tangled up on lap two resulting in an early caution period.  Hensley took the win followed by Brandon Nelson, Chad Finchum, Tyler Mullins and Blake Terry.

Racing action continues at the Music City Motorplex Saturday, June 30 with the DryGDSI.com NASCAR Late Models, T-Mobile NASCAR Super Trucks, NASCAR Grand National Sportsman and a special MMRA Tour event featuring the Mini Cups and Baby Grands.  Qualifying starts at 4:30 and racing starts at 6:30.  More information available at www.MusicCityMotorplex.com or at (615) 726-1818.
