4.19.08 Riverview Speedway Park
Early season weather tough on Little Bristol By TD Clouds are hanging a little low over Riverview Speedway, located next to the Cumberland River in Carthage, TN during a Saturday afternoon practice session. It’s early April and the green waters of the Cumberland River that generally run lazily past the racetrack that is billed the fastest quarter-mile asphalt racetrack in the entire United States, aren’t lazy or green. On this dreary day, the waters of the brown, muddy Cumberland River race past the speedway grounds seeming to challenge the roaring racecars as to which can get around the next turn the fastest. The weather the last several weeks has been a racetrack promoters nightmare; cold at worst, cool at best and if it wasn’t raining, it was threatening to rain. So, a lot of racers and even more fans resign themselves to indoor activities. Although car count, as well as fan attendance, has not been what they would like to see, Arty and Bo Hall, the brand new owners of Riverview Speedway, believe both will improve with the weather. “There are still a lot of drivers getting their cars ready,” Arty, once a driver himself, said as he watched practice from the tracks suite area. “And the weather will improve. What we have to do is continue to provide a good racing venue. We know we have one of the most exciting racetracks in the world. We have to continue to let people know that. After all, this is one of the most exciting and affordable sporting events in the world. A family can come to Riverview, enjoy an evening of fast paced racing and not have to spend a fortune.” As the afternoon wears on and practice evolves into qualifying, a small but steady, stream of fans begins to venture toward the grandstands as the dark clouds continue to lighten. Several drivers, who have obviously been rain watching, pull their racecars into the pits. Things are beginning to look up. Maybe that little ray of sunshine that is struggling to peek through the clouds will break out to a complete sunny day next Saturday.
